What Makes These Fridges Different
Three of SMETA's products — the Lockable Mini Fridge, the 3-Way Propane Camping Fridge and the Propane Refrigerator with Freezer — don't use the compressor that runs in a normal kitchen fridge. Instead they use absorption cooling, a much older technology that cools using heat itself rather than a mechanical pump.
The Cycle: Heat In, Cold Out
An absorption fridge runs on a mix of ammonia, water and hydrogen gas moving through a sealed system, driven by heat rather than a compressor. In simplified terms: a heat source (a propane flame, or an electric heating element on 12V/110V power) boils an ammonia-water mixture in a boiler, separating the ammonia from the water. The ammonia rises, combines with hydrogen gas and gives off its heat to the outside air as it condenses back to liquid. Inside the fridge, that liquid ammonia mixes with hydrogen again and evaporates — and evaporating pulls heat out of the fridge box, which is the actual cooling effect. Why It Runs Silent
There's no compressor and no moving parts anywhere in that cycle — no motor cycling on and off, no mechanical hum. That's the entire reason SMETA can market these as silent: the cooling comes from a heat-driven chemical cycle, not a pump. The One Thing That Actually Matters
Absorption cooling depends on gravity to move the ammonia solution through the system correctly. If the fridge isn't level, that flow slows down, and the boiler can overheat as a result — which is why RV absorption fridges have a real reputation for needing to sit level to work properly and last. If you're placing any of SMETA's absorption-cooled products in a vehicle, on uneven ground, or on a shelf that isn't quite flat, checking it with a level first is worth the extra minute.
